Review of Data Centres in Europe

The growing trend of outsourcing data storage, processing and management to third parties has led to a massive increase in the spread of data centres worldwide. Through their sheer size and diversity of production the two largest places employing data centres are Europe and North America.

There are currently 868 data centres spread throughout Europe based in 40 different countries. The United Kingdom is by far and away the continent’s leader with 147 sites, followed by Germany with 120 and France in third place with 100 plants located within their borders. The main concentrations for data centres in Europe are in London with 51, Paris with 38, Frankfurt with 37 and Amsterdam with 28.

The majority of data centre providers have concentrated their business in Western Europe where over 75% of companies are located. The European market is second only to North America and the United States alone has over 971 separate sites.

The top data centres in Europe are the massive Microsoft complex in Dublin, which is the sixth largest centre worldwide, with the Next Generation Data centre in Newport South Wales the fourth largest complex internationally.

Telecity is one of Europe’s largest collocation data centre providers with 27 sites across the continent. Another contender in the market is Interxion who operate 28 data centres over Europe from 11 countries. CyrusOne provides 17 state of the art collocation centres worldwide and have a reputation for dealing with top 100 businesses.

As the ever-growing demand for business data centres increases it is the likes of Telecity, Interxion and CyrusOne that are leading the way. Developing faster connected and more secure data storage facilities is an increasingly competitive market. These three have some of the biggest business footprints in the business and look set to continue to be at the forefront of data centres. One of the largest challenges for the sector will be the emerging markets in eastern Europe that are looking set to vastly increase their involvement, and western Europe providing innovative and ground breaking centres such as Telecity’s award winning Paris site.
