Why Apple gadget is expensive?

Apple gadgets are generally sold quite expensive, at least higher than competitors in the same market segment. Why is that?

Apple CEO Tim Cook attempted to explain why the higher priced Apple devices. According to him, Apple is interested in quality and are not willing to sacrifice in order to achieve a low price.
